The
Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is expected to welcome its three-runway
system and the auxiliary facilities in the near future to maintain the status
of an international aviation hub. Faced by the growing pressure and expectations
from passengers, the HKIA endeavours to adopt innovation and technologies, aiming
at improving operational efficiencies and customer services throughout the
journey. The Logistics & Transportation (LT) Division was delighted to have
Mr Chris AuYoung, General Manager, Smart Airport, Airport Authority, to present
the latest innovative technology for smarter travel on 31st January 2018 at the
HKIE Headquarters. The seminar attracted approximately a number of 60 members
to attend.
Mr
AuYoung opened the seminar by introducing how the future of air transport at
the HKIA should be shaped. With the help of technovation, passenger journey
could be greatly enhanced and transformed in ways we never imagined. Smart
solutions such as using facial biometrics technology at check-in and boarding
points promise to bring passengers a seamless and hassle-free travel, even
starting from their homes. Check-in services would also be available at off-airport
locations, such as theme parks, hotels, convention centres, cruise terminals,
inclusive of baggage pick up services to make journeys more enjoyable.
As
the presence of mobile devices equipped with GPS is growing at an unprecedented
pace, the HKIA has launched the "HKG My Flight" mobile app to provide
passengers with a wide array of information at the airport. Key features of the
app including indoor map, real-time navigation, and augmented reality
wayfinding were illustrated in some real-world scenarios to help the audience
understand them as fully as possible. Mr AuYoung also gave us the insight into
the deployment of self-check-in, self-bag drop services, high-speed imaging
technology and trolley tracking system at the airport.
The
educative seminar ended with a scintillating discussion session joined by the
audience following the presentation. It is with tremendous appreciation that we
thank Mr AuYoung for his intellectually stimulating speech and contribution to
this seminar.
