HKIE Logistics & Transportation Division
Technical Visit to VTC and MRCC of the Marine
Department
6 July 2018, Friday, 2:30 – 4:30 pm
Programme
Highlights
The
visit includes the VTC and the MRCC of the Marine Department. The Vessel Traffic Services (VTS) system was
installed at the Hong Kong-Macao Ferry Terminal where the VTC is located. It was upgraded in 2016 and offers a faster
and a more accurate assessment of the busy waters in Hong Kong. The system is able to meet the evolving
international operational standards of VTS equipment. Another part of the visit is HK MRCC, which
is responsible for all Search and Rescue (SAR) operations for ships in distress,
both within the waters of Hong Kong and the region of HKSAR in the South China
Sea. The HK MRCC is equipped with
advanced GMDSS equipment to monitor any distress calls from ships. The HK MRCC also acts as a coordinator of
search and rescue operations; it can deploy the Search and Rescue Units
(aircrafts, vessels, etc.) of the relevant agencies and departments when a
marine emergency arises.
