Technical Visit to MTR Tsing Yi Super Operation Control Centre and Hong Kong West Kowloon Station

By Ir Wilson Wong

The LT Division together with Asia Pacific Youth Club jointly organized the captioned two visits on 8 December 2018 (Saturday) with a total of more than 50 participants. The group to Tsing Yi Super Operation Control Centre (OCC) was greeted by MTRC’s Mr Andy Leung (Operations Network Control Manager) with an introduction on the OCC, while the group to West Kowloon Station (WEK) was greeted by MTRC’s Mr Benny Ng (Society Link Relationship Manager) and Mr William Mak (Senior Construction Engineer – Civil) with an introduction on the construction of WEK.

Tsing Yi Super OCC , which was opened in 1998, is truly the brain of the railway network in Hong Kong. There are over 170 responsible staffs working for 24x7 operation. The centre area is of 700 square metres. This visit gave participants a visualization and understanding on how OCC is controlling and monitoring the existing 11 lines of train service including Tsuen Wan Line, Kwun Tong Line, Island Line, Tseung Kwan O Line, Tung Chung Line, Disneyland Resort Line, the Airport Express, East Rail Line, West Rail Line, Ma On Shan Line and South Island Line.

For the newly opened Hong Kong West Kowloon Station, it has equipped with fifteen tracks and is one of the largest underground train stations in the world. It is conveniently located next to the West Kowloon Cultural District and serves as the southern gateway of Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Express Rail Link  as well as the national over 22,000 km long high-speed passenger rail network. This visit enabled the participants to better understand about the station design as well as how WEK was built along with the engineering difficulties of this mega project.
