Shortly after the handing over of HK in 1997, the Pearl River Delta was uprising quickly and becoming the world’s most busy manufacturing and logistic centre resulted to the Opening Policy adopted by China. Containers full of finished products from the delta area were running both on land or by sea rushing to the container terminals at Kwan Chung. In order to fulfil such transportation needs, a series of highway projects were initiated and constructed during that period for such purposes.

To make it works, a series of local and cross-boundary highway projects were introduced, that finally formed a very efficient network shaping Hong Kong into a transportation hub to serve the Delta region. Huanggang Port facilities, Hong Kong-Shenzhen Western Corridor, Route 3, Route 8, Liantang Port/Heung Yuen Wai Boundary Control Point, HK-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, as well as some other control point/port upgrading and highway improvement projects … , were part of these key inputs.

Making use of this seminar, the speaker will give an overall review with more focus on the planning and construction of these projects. How these projects finally integrated and formed a significant regional network linking both Hong Kong and the nearby cities within the Great Bay Area will also be briefly discussed.
