Report on Technical Visit to Asia Airfreight Terminal (AAT)

By Ir Dr. Irene Poon

The Logistics and Transportation Division (LTD) organized a technical visit to AAT on 10 January afternoon.  The visit, divided into two sessions, was led by Ir Stewart Chun, General Manager–Technology & Quality Control and Ms Charmaine Wong, Marketing Manager.  Participants could gain insight into the daily operation of the air cargo terminal through this valuable opportunity.

The first part of the site visit started with Charmaine's introduction of the company background, followed by Stewart's succinct explanation of their business model as well as terminal operation.

In the latter half of the visit, two teams of participants were guided by two Quality Control Managers, Mr Billy Leung and Mr Francis Soo, respectively.  Both managers illustrated the handling of inbound and outbound shipments in detail.  The Customer Services Counter was the first stop where participants witnessed the collection of inbound cargoes.  After the security check by Aviation Security Company (AVSECO), they visited numerous storage facilities built for processing various cargoes such as the Automatic Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), Dangerous Goods (DG) storage room, Valuable (VAL) room, Pallet and Container Handling System (PCHS), Cool room (cooler and freezer), Live Animal (AVI) room and pharmaceutical storage.  Lastly, participants observed how the Import Perishable Handling Centre and Customs & Excise Department (perishable cargoes) dealt with the inbound perishable cargoes.

Here, the LTD would like to extend sincere thanks to Ir Stewart Chun and his colleagues.  Without their hospitable reception, this technical visit could not have been a success.
